Hohe Tauern National Park
This unique natural and cultural area located in the heart of the Alps offers visitors a variety of alpine sports and leisure activities, fresh mountain air and the warmth of the locals.
Wild landscapes and farming areas: These are the two faces of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The corner stone for the park was set in 1981 and it has since evolved into the largest protected natural area in the Alps. Its 1856 km2 extend over three regions (Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol) as well as natural wonders such as ancient alpine lanscapes, glaciers, rock formations and carefully cultivated alpine pastures.
The Hohe Tauern mountain range's highest peak, the Grossglockner (3,798 m above sea level), is the 'roof' of Austria. More than 300 other peaks reaching over 3,000 meters into the sky form a unique scenery. Nearly 10% of the entire park is still covered by glacial ice. Over 270 natural mountain streams plunge into the valley. It is a national park in an extreme area. Despite difficult living conditions, many biotopes thrive better here than anywhere else in Austria. The diverse flora and fauna assure unforgettable experiences for nature lovers.
The residents (who to this day live in this nearly forgotten culture) are also very special. Humans have been living in this area for about 5,000 years. The ambitious search for ore led people here who slowly cultivated land high above the tree lines. An extraordinary array of animals and plants as well as a wealth of gems of rural life are the result of this long-standing symbiosis between mother nature and man.
Thus, the Hohe Tauern National Park is a gem for hikers, cyclists, nature lovers - in every season. Discover this unique area by exploring the mountains and the valley on your own.
