In days gone by, social conditions here were extremely challenging. Daily life was dominated by hard agricultural work. But today, Grossarl has long since broken free of these constraints. The concentration of Alpine pastures in the Grossarltal valley is now a source of wonder and offers hikers and visitors on walking tours highly varied options for getting active outdoors.

The Großarltal valley

Grossarl refers to a small town in the district of St. Johann im Pongau. This is the heart of the Grossarltal valley, situated 924 metres above sea level. With just shy of 4,000 inhabitants, it’s a small place that has made an impressive mark.

Thanks to the many Alpine pastures with huts that are still maintained, the Grossarltal is known as the Tal der Almen, or Valley of Alpine Pastures. In the winter months the Grossarltal-Dorfgastein interconnected ski area is the highlight of the region.

Hohe Tauern National Park

Hohe Tauern National Park contains 300 peaks and provides habitats for around 15,000 species of animals and birds. The national park covers a total area of 1,856 square kilometres in three different Austrian federal provinces. The national park’s mission includes harmony between people and nature, and ensuring that this coexistence is sustainable. This works very well today, as the Alpine ecosystems still cover very large areas and remain undisturbed. Whether it’s classic walking routes, wildlife watching, or skiing.

Hiking in Großarl

The Hohe Tauern area enchants visitors with its unique range of flora and fauna. It’s not unusual to see wild goats and Alpine chamois not far from the path, picking their way up the steep cliffsides.
