The City of Salzburg, whose old town enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status, never fails to impress with its mix of history, romantic lanes, beautiful palaces and museums. Tradition and modernity are woven together, and impressively incorporated into the surrounding Alpine landscape.
The City of Salzburg produced a number of important sights and personalities even before its charter in 1804. Salzburg natives Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Herbert von Karajan, in particular thanks to the Salzburg Festival, have made arguably the greatest contributions to Salzburg becoming a Mecca for culture fans. But even outside the festival season with over 4,000 events, there is plenty to discover in the picturesque old town.

Pay Mozart a visit

The house in which Mozart was born is probably the most popular tourist destination in Salzburg. The building, known officially as the Hagenauer Haus, is one of Austria’s most visited museums and with its many exhibits including original furniture, documents and letters, it appeals not only to hardened Mozart fans. A later residence, the Tanzmeister Haus, has also been adapted into a museum.

Mozart lived here until he moved to Vienna in 1781. Visitors can find out all about Mozart’s years in Salzburg, and enjoy special exhibitions, concerts, and fascinating talks. And Mozart fans should be sure to take part in the Mozart City Tour!

Salzburg's fortress, castles and places

From the walls of Hohensalzburg Fortress you have a unique view over the city below. Even from a distance it’s impossible to miss this emblem of the city with its Baroque towers. The same goes for Salzburg Cathedral, in front of which the festival stage for the annual production of Everyman is constructed every summer.

The richly detailed wall and ceiling murals, and opulent decoration, never fail to astonish visitors entering the cathedral for the first time. Meanwhile mystic grottos and refreshing trick fountains await at the picturesque Schloss Hellbrunn. There’s plenty to discover at this Lustschloss, or pleasure palace, which does its best to live up to its name.
